It has a USB-C adapter on one side and a USB-A adapter on the other. Slide the switch one direction or the other to change your options. I use mine all the time to transfer stuff from my MacBook Pro to a computer that only has USB-A ports. Mac computers that have any of the following ports can connect to HDMI devices. Learn how to identify the ports on your Mac. HDMI port: Connects directly to HDMI using an HDMI cable. USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port: Connects to HDMI using an adapter, such as the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

I had an OWC Aura 480gb SSD that I removed from my MacBook Air 2012. I wanted to repurpose the Aura SSD as an external drive for my new MacBook. OWC states that the Envoy enclosure does not work with the Aura drive (only Apple OEM), so I needed to look for an adapter that would work. This did the job perfectly. Plugged in the drive to the adapter and the USB-C adapter to the USB 3 cable and into the MacBook.
DiskUtility recognized and I was able to erase/format and now I have a usable 480 gb SSD. I suppose it would be nice to have an enclosure but I'll figure that out. Right now I'm happy to have repurposed a SSD I thought was going to be useless. Feel free to scroll down to the pros and cons if you do not wish to read this review in its entirety. Just to be clear, I bought the 2.5 inch version. This is a great little cable to have. My intended purpose was to clone my existing hard drive to a SSHD on my laptop.
I needed a cable to connect to one of my USB ports or my eSATA port to my new hard drive. This cable worked flawlessly for that project.
I simply snapped it on and it was ready to go. The only problem I seem to have faced was that the actual hard drive itself was a bit exposed with nothing to protect it. For this, an enclosure would fit the job much better. Internal hard drives are intended to be stored internally where they are less likely to be moved or bumped. But with an enclosure.
The only reason this review is 4 instead of 5 is because it doesn't fully shut off when the device it's connected to is off and the lights on the case are WAY too bright. I have taken some photos of the complete teardown that show how I solved that problem. If you are like me and like to keep everything stealth and dark at night so you sleep better or so you don't have distracting lights while you're watching shows/gaming then this fix might be for you. We had an old my book studio II 2TB drive that we took the HDDs out of for these 2 Roswell cases we bought. This case worked beautifully with the drives we pulled out of the my book studio.
Photos of what kind of HDD those are also shown. I have a few Kingston SVP180S2/128G drives that I wanted to use via USB. I tried a Lenovo 42W7888 with a USB enclosure as well as with other USB-to-SATA adapters I have but none of them would recognize it.
The 42W7888 did work if I hooked it directly to my motherboard SATA cable though. I also have a SATA 22 Pin Male to Micro SATA 16 pin female adapter plug that worked with all my USB-to-SATA adapters as well as the motherboard SATA.
So decided to try a dedicated interface like this one to see if that would work. I first hooked up a drive that was already formatted and that I had been using. It never showed up in 'this pc', so ran diskmgmt.msc and it reported that it had not been initialized. So I got another drive that was still new in package. I've actually purchased startech cables for my business for years before it went under. We re-sold startech cables and always could trust the fast shipping, high quality cables. After I closed up the business and went looking for cables for personal use, it only made sense to use the cables that I'd always sold before.
If you sell quality products it does. Because I used startech cables.:) I needed a right angle SATA cable for my case and this did the trick.

I was very happy with the result as I expected, so I rightfully purchased with confidence. You should too.
Startech is a solid company and is going to continue to be my goto place for cables for personal use in the future. Price is right, and you won't find a better deal for this quality elsewhere.
